Insulation is the key to keeping your home's temperature comfortable in Kansas's climate. Insulation comprises many layers of material designed to retain the air conditioning inside your home. Much like an animal thickens its fur for winter and thins the hair out for summer, you should regularly maintain your home's insulation.
Age-related replacement of insulation usually depends on the type of insulation used. For example, insulation made of natural fibers like fiberglass, cellulose, and spray foam should be replaced approximately every 15- 30 years, according to Home Inspection Insider. It is time to get an inspection of your insulation when you start having issues like:
Insulation compromised by a roof leak will need to be inspected for water damage and mold growth. Any damaged insulation should be removed. The insulation around bathroom vents is vulnerable to water damage if the ducts are improperly installed.
Insulation that is not damaged by water or has any infestations can remain in place and be covered by new insulation. Layered insulation is helpful. The new insulation can help fill in the gaps the old insulation created and thicken the insulation levels to make more of a barrier to prevent air escape.
Some insulation installations, like fiberglass mats, may seem easy to do by yourself, but then you have the question of how to dispose of the old, grungy, broken insulation. Safety matters: it is better to hire a professional to install the insulation properly for the best application. However, if you need to know how to dispose of insulation, Hunker has a few tips for matt insulation:
Professional insulation installers will remove, clean, and replace your insulation without leaving you to dispose of the old insulation. In addition, some fiberglass insulation can be recycled if there is a facility in the area that can handle fiberglass recycling. Ask your contractor if they can reclaim the fiberglass for you.
Blown-in insulation can remain and be added to when undamaged and undisturbed. The new layers will be able to fill in the gaps. You typically want your blown-in insulation to be a thickness of 12" to 24" depending on the R-value of the materials used. Sprayed-in insulation fills the gaps and creates a rigid barrier that can only be removed if cut off. You only need to replace this insulation if animals are chewing through it. Often, a new layer of spray foam can cover the holes.
If there is no damage to your current insulation, you do not have to remove old insulation to add a new layer. However, inspect your insulation for water damage and mold if you suspect roof leaks.
